We're going to celebrate Independence Day in a traditional way in Jyväskylä

Independence Day, 6 December 2022, will be celebrated in Jyväskylä with a program organized by the City of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä Garrison, and Jyväskylä Parish.

The Independence Day special service celebration will take place at Taulumäki church at 10:00 a.m. (address: Lohikoskentie 2).

Haikara won the general art competition for Jyväskylä's Kankaanaukio

The art competition organized by Kangas Service Ltd to choose artwork for Kankaanaukio (Kangas square) has now ended. The competition winner is Haikara (Stork), designed by Teija and Pekka Isorättyä.

Haikara also overwhelmingly won the public vote, so the prize amount for the winners rose to 7,000 EUR.

Save the Children association has granted the Ukraine project of Jyväskylä Youth Art Workshop with the Year 2022 Childish Act Recognition

Save the Children association of Jyväskylä will present Aurinkopaja- Sun workshop with the Year 2022 Childish Act recognition on Monday, 21 November. Ukrainian youth will also be able to watch the Finnish premiere of the film Outside (Olha Zhurba, Ukraine, 2022) at the Arktisen Upeeta film festival on the previous Sunday.

Secto Rally Finland brought over EUR 17 million to the Jyväskylä region

The Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, or Secto Rally Finland, returned this year to its full four-day glory after the difficult coronavirus period. A total of 230,000 spectators were recorded in Jyväskylä and Central Finland, the visitor record was broken in Harju, and the Finnish World Cup Rally left a jackpot of income behind for the Jyväskylä region and Central Finland.

We will celebrate the Finland-Japan friendship with various events in Jyväskylä from 31.10 to 06.11.2022

In Autumn 2022, the Japanese Embassy in Finland will celebrate the Finland-Japan friendship year with various events. The events will take place from 31.10 to 06.11.2022, where you can get to know Japanese culture, hobbies, and people. Participating in public events are free-of-charge unless previously notified.

During the event, the City of Jyväskylä and the Japanese twin city of Niiza will celebrate the 25-years relationship between the two cities.

The women-only swimming session is again organized every month in Vaajakoski Wellamo swimming hall

The women-only swimming shift is being organized by City of Jyväskylä sports services as a part of the NytLiikkelle service package. The session is set every month at the Wellamo swimming hall in Vaajakoski, Jyväskylä.

The women's shift for the 2022–2023 season is organized once a month on Fridays from 18:00 to 20:30.

Finland’s Susijengi, the Lauri Markkanen homecoming, and amity across borders

For the first time in 34 years, Jyväskylä will host a men’s basketball national team game. Finland’s national team, Susijengi, faces Ukraine at LähiTapiola Areena on Thursday, August 18, as they gear up for EuroBasket 2022. This will also be the first national team game for Lauri Markkanen, the premier star of Finnish basketball, in his hometown.

The Covid-19 situation calming down in Jyväskylä - Sports restrictions for under 18 years old will be released and libraries and museums will be opened to the public from 15 February 2021

During this week a total of 47 coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Jyväskylä. Jyväskylä's incidence rate has also decreased. The need for hospital care has not increased significantly either. Approximately 80% of the origin of infections can be traced. Consequently, Jyväskylä has returned to the accelerating phase of the coronavirus.

Jyväskylä gives an extensive mask recommendation to its residents over the age of 15 for two weeks - masks must always be worn in all indoor public places as well as at public events.

The city also appeals to student organisations to further postpone student events. Jyväskylä recommends extensive use of face masks to all its residents over the age of 15 during the next two weeks. The reason is the growing number of Covid-19 infections in Jyväskylä and the estimate that an acceleration phase of the disease is underway in Jyväskylä.

Two new self-service libraries launched in Jyväskylä, age restrictions lifted

Palokan ja Vaajakosken aluekirjastojen aukioloajat laajenevat merkittävästi maanantaista 3.2.2020 alkaen. Kirjastot ovat avoinna omatoimikirjastoina varsinaisten palveluaikojen ulkopuolella aamuisin, iltaisin, viikonloppuisin ja pyhinä. Myös omatoimikirjastoaikojen ikäraja on poistunut.

The libraries in Palokka and Vaajakoski will operate extended opening hours from Monday, 3 February 2020.

Draft report on cultural investment presented to Jyväskylä City Council

The Heart of Jyväskylä project was presented to the Jyväskylä City Council on 3 February. The Heart of Jyväskylä project was set up to create a master plan for cultural investment in the city. The master plan will cover the potential development of a new music venue, as well as the significant refurbishment and new development that will be required across the city’s cultural infrastructure in the coming years. The first version of the draft report was presented to the city council by Heart of Jyväskylä project manager Janne Viitamies. A final report on the investment required is due to be published in March 2020.
