For the first time in 34 years, Jyväskylä will host a men’s basketball national team game. Finland’s national team, Susijengi, faces Ukraine at LähiTapiola Areena on Thursday, August 18, as they gear up for EuroBasket 2022. This will also be the first national team game for Lauri Markkanen, the premier star of Finnish basketball, in his hometown.

The schedule of events for this hot week of Jyväskylä basketball includes:

National team game Finland-Ukraine, Thursday, August 18 at 6.30 pm

Join us in welcoming the Lauri Markkanen -led Susijengi to Jyväskylä for their final warm-up game before autumn’s World Cup qualification games and the EuroBasket tournament. Susijengi meets the Ukraine national team in this friendly game. The event is nearly sold out.

The City of Jyväskylä partners with the basketball week and supports our Ukrainian guests

The City of Jyväskylä is a key partner in this fantastic national team event. The city has made the arrangements for the arena, as well as the necessary practice facilities and fan meeting areas for each team.

The Ukraine national team will enjoy robust support in LähiTapiola Areena’s stands as well, because the city has collaborated with the Finnish Basketball Association to invite every one of the about 250 Ukrainian children who begun school in Jyväskylä this autumn to the game.

Aware of the circumstances facing Ukraine, the City of Jyväskylä will also provide for the accommodation, meals, and transportation of the Ukraine national team for the duration of their visit.

The Susijengi-Ukraine game will also see Basketball Finland launch their international ”The Game That Unites Us” project.
